ABOUT PAUL

Paul Brodeur began his legal career in public service as an Assistant District Attorney in the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office. Subsequently, he spent eight years as an enforcement attorney in Massachusetts Securities Division, where he protected Massachusetts investors from financial fraud. Paul later served as counsel for the Executive Office of Elder Affairs, where his achievements included improving elder protective services and promoting independence for seniors. He served on the Melrose Board of Aldermen (now the City Council) for nine years, including one term as President. There he was able to build consensus and set a legislative agenda focused on sustainable growth and fiscal responsibility.

In 2010, Paul was elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives, representing the 32nd Middlesex District, which includes all of Melrose and portions of Wakefield and Malden. In 2013, he was appointed as the House Vice Chairman of the Joint Committee on Consumer Protection and Public Licensure. In the 2015-2016 legislative session, Paul was named House Vice Chairman of the Joint Committee on Telecommunications, Utilities and Energy, where he helped draft legislation to provide for the largest procurement of clean energy in the history of the Commonwealth. Most recently, Paul served as House Chair of the Joint Committee on Labor and Workforce Development. During his chairmanship, Massachusetts enacted groundbreaking legislation to protect pregnant workers, extend OSHA protections to municipal workers, provide paid family and medical leave, and raise the minimum wage. Paul was particularly proud to work with Senator Jason Lewis to build a coalition of business leaders, labor leaders, and advocates to negotiate and achieve consensus in writing these bills and passing them into law.

His budgetary advocacy has brought hundreds of thousands of dollars back to Melrose, empowering economic development, ensuring quality education, and improving municipal services. Paul has worked together with our surrounding communities to develop partnerships, improve Oak Grove, and invest in downtowns. Paul was elected Mayor of Melrose and took office in November 2019.

Paul, a proud product of Melrose public schools, holds degrees from Lafayette College and Suffolk Law School. He and his wife Liz live in Melrose where they are raising their two sons, Ethan and Sam.
